It’s only natural that Oregon State University’s nationally ranked College of Forestry’s new 80,687 square foot academic building be constructed with advanced wood products. The 3-story replacement of Peavy Hall includes an all-mass timber above-ground structure, including the first post-tensioned CLT shear walls in the United States. OSU is showcasing the state-of-the-art facility for what CLT can do. So far it’s a hit, as Andersen’s team is leading tours nearly every week of the CLT installation.

To build a first-of-its-kind building, pre-planning and modeling were taken to another level. Because of the CLT structure, rough-in is more complex. The entire project was built in BIM and clash detection is being carefully overseen by Andersen’s onsite team. Along with a unique structure, the Forest Science Complex (FSC) also includes an exterior combination of glass and Accoya treated wood. The Accoya is local alder that’s shipped to The Netherlands, Accoya-processed, and delivered to the OSU campus. Upon completion in April, 2019, the FSC will tie floor-by-floor to Richardson Hall and will be home to classrooms, laboratories, offices and meeting spaces. A separate 15,000 square foot advanced wood products building and a 1,000 square foot field instrument room are also part of the scope.
